This master's degree has been awarded the new distinction as an International Master's Programme (IMP) by the Government of Catalonia.

The master's degree in Analytic Philosophy is aimed mainly at those who wish to delve more deeply into advanced research of theoretical and practical philosophical questions based on the perspective of Analytic Philosophy.

The programme is open to graduates of Philosophy still unfamiliar with the tenets and methods of analytical philosophy, but also with degrees in other subjects; in the latter case, they will have to take a maximum of 30 credits in bridging courses.

Analytic Philosophy originates from late 19th and early 20th century works by authors like Frege, Russell, Moore and Wittgenstein on logic, language, ontology, epistemology and ethics. The analytic tradition is currently predominant in most Anglo-Saxon universities. In our country Analytic Philosophy has a relatively minor presence in universities and the mass media; however, the groups at four Catalan universities that offer this master's degree (mainly taught in English) have carried out considerable research activity in recent years, partly thanks to the ICREA and Ramón y Cajal programmes, which have allowed the incorporation of renowned professionals previously employed by foreign universities.

Thanks to their methods (which emphasise clarity of argument, perspicacity and imaginative criticism of proposals that go far beyond common intuition), analytic philosophy has shown itself in the Anglo-Saxon world to be a fundamental tool in training professionals in the most sought-after transferable skills, such as the ability to identify and articulate the central points in any debate, precision of thought and expression when analysing complex problems or the ability to approach proposals with curiosity and a critical spirit. Students who are not seeking an academic career will still have good opportunities to apply the knowledge they have acquired either in public administration or private enterprise.

Career options

The main areas are research and university teaching in fields related to the cognitive sciences. Other possible areas are those which benefit from an interdisciplinary education in language studies, such as publishing, information technologies, cultural management, journalism and public administration. Consequently, students completing this master's degree can go on to work as researchers and lecturers, consultants (in areas covered by the master's degree), and managers in public administration.
