UAB launches the "IA JURISSALUD" project on the legal challenges of artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector

Projecte IA JURISSALUD

The UAB has launched the IA JURISSALUD project, a pioneering initiative that examines the main legal challenges arising from the use of predictive artificial intelligence in the healthcare field, within the context of the recent regulatory push at the European and national levels.

The Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, within the framework of the 2024 “Knowledge Generation” call, has funded the IA JURISSALUD project (PID2024-160176NB-I00) in order to study the legal challenges associated with the implementation of predictive artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector.

The project is led by Dr. Sandra Camacho Clavijo, Lecturer of Civil Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and has a multidisciplinary research team composed of:

  • Dr. Francisco Amenar Pineda (University of Valencia)
  • Dr. Ángela Casals Fernández (UNED)
  • Dr. Carlos Gorriz López (UAB)
  • Dr. Susana Navas Navarro (UAB)
  • Dr. Carles Padrós Reig (UAB)
  • Dr. Mónica Perna Hernández (UAB)
  • Dr. Santiago Robert Guillem (UAB)

The aim of the project is to identify and analyse the legal issues raised by the use of predictive AI in medical practice, based on the recent regulatory framework promoted by the European Union —the European Artificial Intelligence Act and Directive 2024/2853 on liability for damage caused by defective products— as well as Spanish law and various comparative legal systems.

In addition, the project incorporates an empirical perspective through coordinated work with healthcare professionals and engineers specializing in medical-purpose AI (Committee of Experts), with the aim of identifying the main legal issues that arise in real clinical practice.
