On November 22, at 12 pm, Anthony Bottoms, a professor at the universities of
Cambridge and Sheffield, will be invested in Honorary Doctorate by the Universitat
Autònoma de Barcelona
(UAB). It is one of the principal promoters of a humanistic
criminal policy sustained on an empirical basis. Bottoms went to the universities of
Oxford and Cambridge and taught at the University of Sheffield. He rejoined
Cambridge in 1984, where he became director of the Institute of Criminology and, later,
director of the Centre for Penal Theory and Penal Ethics. His work is based on the
concept that the most advanced criminal policies must have empirical support for their
efficacy.

The new Honorary Doctorate has been a lecturer in the Master’s in Criminology and
the Degree in Criminology at the UAB and has participated in the commemorative
sessions of the tenth anniversary of the master’s degree. He has collaborated in
research activity in the criminological field, and he admitted, to the Cambridge Institute
of Criminology, researchers from the UAB who carried out research stays. In addition,
in 2016, he inaugurated the XI Congreso Español de Criminología (XI Spanish
Congress of Criminology), organized by the UAB and the Centre d’Estudis Jurídics I
Formació Especialitzada. His line of investigation on topics such as alternative
sentences, quality of life in prison and abandonment have been very influential among
criminology experts in Catalonia.

Among other recognitions, Bottoms has received the Sellin-Glueck Award from the
American Society of Criminology and the European Society of Criminology Award. He
has also received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Sheffield, Queens
University Belfast and the University of Malmö.

On the other hand, the day before this event, the Faculty has organized a seminar
entitled: “The contribution to criminology of Professor Bottoms”, in which different
professors will discuss, with the presence of Professor Bottoms, their contributions in
this field.
