Seminar: "Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Tropical Peatlands in Southeast Asia: Impacts of Degradation and Restoration"

Peatlands in Southeast Asia store ~10% of the global peat soil carbon stock. Over the last few decades, wide scale deforestation and drainage of peatlands in Southeast Asia have turned these ecosystems from a carbon sink into a significant carbon source. Ongoing efforts to restore tropical peatlands seek to mitigate climate change through reducing greenhouse gas emissions from peatland degradation. In this presentation, Dr. Perryman will share work from collaborative efforts exploring the impact of degradation and restoration on greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands in Southeast Asia. Firstly, she will share insights on the stability of tropical peat soil carbon gained from a long-term decomposition experiment. Secondly, Dr. Perryman will discuss her work on methane emissions from ditches and canals draining tropical peatlands. Lastly, she will present findings from collaborative research that seeks to quantify the impact of rewetting and restoration on greenhouse gas emissions from tropical peatlands.

Dr. Clarice R. Perryman is a Research Scientist at the Stanford University Doerr School of Sustainability, where she previously was also a US National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Her research seeks to understand greenhouse gas emissions from natural ecosystems and how these emissions are changing in response to climate change and land use disturbances. Dr. Perryman’s work has spanned terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems from the Arctic to the tropics, and her current research focuses on greenhouse gas emissions from tropical wetlands.
