Farreras family collection
Family lineage of different generations with important contributions in the field of veterinary medicine. In the field of veterinary medicine there are three outstanding figures, Josep, Francisco and Pere Farreras Sampera.
Josep Farreras i Sampera (Masnou, 1880 - Masnou, 1914) and Pere Farreras i Sampera (Masnou, Maresme, 1876 - Barcelona, 1955) founded the 1906 Revista Pasteur, which was renamed a year later Revista Veterinaria de España (1907-1936). This publication became a reference for the veterinary of the time and stands as one of the most relevant professional magazines for the Spanish veterinary, getting, even, international recognitions as the gold medal in the Hispano-French exhibition of 1908. Francisco Farreras i Sampera, lawyer and known for his veterinary jurisprudence texts, assumes the position of administration and editorial of the magazine on the death of Josep, while Pere Farreras, will occupy the position of editor of the magazine.
The activity of the Farreras family is completed, in 1912, with the creation of the Biblioteca de la Revista Veterinaria de España. From this editorial, Pere Farreras will translate, mainly from the German, the most important European works in veterinary matter of the first half of the s. XX. The translations of the veterinary texts by Franz Hutyra and Josef Marek, Patología y terapéutica especiales de los animales domésticos, and that of E. Fröhner and G. Zwick, Compendio de patología y terapéutica veterinariaare just two examples. He is also the precursor of the translation of the well-known Manual práctico de medicina interna by Dr. Von Domarus.
Noteworthy is the remarkable contribution of the Farreras family in the evolution of health sciences in Spain. This is supported both by the publication of the Revista Veterinaria de España and by the remarkable translations of medical and veterinary works.
