Ideal student profile

This master's degree is for those with a previous university qualification, preferably in Art History, but also in Arts and the Humanities, Architecture or Social Science subjects, such as Audiovisual Communication, Journalism, Tourism, Anthropology or Education, who wish to train as managers and researchers of artistic heritage. The degree is also appropriate for graduates wishing to work in museums, foundations, art galleries, or archive and exhibition centres for the artistic heritage, or to undertake postgraduate training leading to a PhD.

Students must have a minimum level of reading competence in English. An equivalent knowledge of Italian and French is also highly recommended, given the importance of the bibliography in these languages for  research in all areas of art history and museography.

Skills are required in research and analysis of bibliographic materials in libraries.
Necessary personal qualities are: an interest in art and learning, sensibility and a broad knowledge of culture.

  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.

Specific skills

  • Understand the analysis methods used in research into the artistic heritage, and art theory and history.
  • Reconstruct and critically analyse the positions of the principal current researchers into the artistic heritage, using their characteristic categorisations and vocabulary.
  • Define, plan and carry out a research project in the field of art history and artistic heritage that is critical, original and in line with current scientific practice.
  • Find links between concepts and knowledge in different areas of art history that previously had not been observed.
  • Transfer historical and artistic research to society.
  • Be familiar with the resources and skills that a professional art historian or artistic heritage specialist needs and develop the ability to meet the challenges involved in the care, study and management of the artistic heritage.
  • Explore new interdisciplinary strategies for art historians' career development.
