Official Master's Degree in Theatre Studies

Access

Access to this master's degree is open to holders of an official bachelor's degree from a Spanish university or from another higher education institution within or outside the European Higher Education Area, provided this gives access to postgraduate studies in the country of issue.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements are as follows:

1. Bachelor's degree, preferably in philology or in any specialisation of drama studies.
2. Pending an examination of applicants' academic backgrounds, the master's admissions committee will consider applications (with a recommendation, if deemed necessary, to take bridging courses) from graduates in Arts and the Humanities, Social and Legal Sciences (Anthropology, Political Science), Architecture, Audiovisual Communication and multimedia, Education Studies, Health Sciences (Physical Activity and Sports, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy), Social work, Tourism, Events Organisation, Protocol and Institutional Relations.
3. Candidates from European and non-European countries with equivalent qualifications.
4. Foreign students who have not studied at Spanish universities through the Erasmus programme or have not taken subjects taught in Spanish at their home universities need to certify that their command of Spanish is at level B2.

Selection criteria

Should the number of applicants be higher than that of places on offer, these will be allocated according to the following criteria:

1. Affinity between access qualifications and this master's degree (40%). See the previous section (bachelor's degrees in philology and in any specialisation of drama studies).
2. Academic transcript (25%)
3. Motivation letter (5%)
4. Curriculum Vitae. Professional experience in the Performing Arts is given special consideration (25%)
5. Reference letters (5%)

If deemed necessary, interviews may also be held with candidates as part of the selection process.

Complementary training

Bridging courses may be required of future students if the documents they have presented in support of their application or an interview reveal gaps in their competences.

The master's coordinator will establish any bridging courses to be taken by students, from a minimum of 6 credits to a maximum of 30, to be chosen from among the following bachelor's degree subjects:

Group A:
  • Modern and Contemporary Catalan Theatre (6 credits). Bachelor's degree in Catalan Language and Literature (UAB)
  • Present-day Catalan Theatre (6 credits). Bachelor's degree in Catalan Language and Literature (UAB)
  • Golden Age Spanish Theatre (6 credits). Bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Literature (UAB)
  • Greek Drama (6 credits). Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies (UAB)
  • Introduction to Theories of Performance I (2 credits). Bachelor's Degree in Drama (ITB).
  • Introduction to Theories of Performance II (3 credits). Bachelor's Degree in Drama (ITB).

Group B:
  • Theory and Analysis of Theatre (6 credits). Bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Literature (UAB)
  • Theory of Dance (3 credits) Bachelor's degree in Dance (ITB)
  • Anthropology in Theatre (4 credits). Bachelor's Degree in Drama (ITB).
  • Technology and Performance (6 credits). Bachelor's Degree in Drama (ITB).
  • Adaptation for Drama (4 credits). Bachelor's Degree in Drama (ITB).
  • Structures and Procedures in Contemporary Drama (4 credits). Bachelor's Degree in Drama (ITB).
  • Dramatisation I (4 credits). Bachelor's Degree in Drama (ITB).

Group C:
  • Modern and Contemporary Catalan Theatre (6 credits). Bachelor's degree in Catalan Language and Literature (UAB)
  • Present-day Catalan Theatre (6 credits). Bachelor's degree in Catalan Language and Literature (UAB)
